Founded by Vivian Cheung earlier this year, Frenglish is a Montreal-based startup. Incubated in the province of Quebec, Canada, Frenglish set out to solve a local problem that also addressed a broader global challenge around language localization. In an effort to protect the use of the French language, the government of Quebec passed Bill 96 in 2022, which requires all businesses in the province to operate in French. In practice, it meant that all businesses would need to effectively operate in two languages, French and English, to serve a region with bilingual customers and employees. Out of this distinct regional challenge, the Frenglish team saw the potential to introduce AI-powered translation services.
